Through education, outreach and advocacy, NCIP supports policies that keep innocent people out of prison, free the wrongfully convicted, and provide adequate supports and resources for exonerees. We recognize that the criminal justice system makes mistakes; we work with other system stakeholders to rectify mistakes that have happened and to prevent future mistakes.
NCIP prioritizes legislative efforts that address the consequences and causes of wrongful conviction. Our priorities for this legislative session include implementing eyewitness identification best practices, providing automatic compensation to exonerees, expanding defense access to post-conviction discovery, and improving evidence retention in criminal cases.
NCIP also helps to implement evidence-based practices to reduce the occurrence of wrongful convictions by holding trainings and symposia for attorneys, law enforcement, judges, and the criminal justice community.
